I am currently at the beginning of my fourth week as a "non-smoker". I don't really know why I started smoking in the first place or what on earth could've possibly provoked me to continue, I think that a big part of it is just that you don't ever do anything for the first time expecting that there will come a day when you will want to or need to be able to quit, or that it will have to come down to trying to quit. I certainly would just never start in the first place if given the opportunity to be at that point in my life again. I smoked for over 12 years and have tried to quit on numerous occasions, only to be smoking again within a week or two. Even with the help of nicotine replacement patches it is still an everyday part of you're life. Smoking is as much a mental addiction as it is a physical addiction (at least for me!). Still, it has been nearly a month since I've had so much as one drag, and I find myself feeling like I want one at several key points throughout the day. It doesn't seem like it should be such a big deal to those who aren't smokers, which is how all of us thought about it before we actually got addicted. It's for alot of us almost like an adult pacifier, they soothe us when we're upset. You just have to find the part of your life that makes the battle with the urges easier than the alternative...for me I'm 29 and have a 2 year old son, and what motivates me to quit is to imagine him standing over my grave in ten years. It isn't my fear of dying, it is my fear of leaving my son behind if I do. It's alot easier for me to deny the urges with that image stained in my brain than it ever was before when I was the only person who had to suffer from my choices.

I think I started because everyone said not to, and I've always had this voice in the back of my head that tells me to do what I'm not supposed to. It's my inner 6 year-old.
I've tried quitting, but it's hard while living in a house full of smokers.
I'll stop for 3 days, and then something stressful will happen, or I'll get drunk, and there I am puffing away again...

I started because those truth commercials annoyed the hell out of me, and I needed to relieve the stress. I'd quit if I wasn't so afraid i'd turn into them.
