A Shaman uses the power of his own mind and the power of the universe and creation. He can go into the spiritual world 'beyond the veil' and spirits there will also help him. Unlike a Wizard a Shaman does not pull the power, he ask politely for it to help. He never goes for himself or his family, only for others. If he needs help he ask another Shaman to go to the other world for him. It is possible for a Shaman to go to the darkside, but most all are very holy people.

How they obtain that power depends on whether their path is classical Shamanism or Core Shamanism.

The same as everyone else's source of power: the Self.

Some choose to externalize this and call it Yahweh or Zeus or Allah or the Great Spirit or some other deity. Some externalize it and call it nature.

Others choose to internalize this power.

Regardless, it is all the same -- self.

I am a Shaman,I pray over a large number of herbs I have when people come to me for help with an ailment ,disease .whatever.have saved many a life, including my wife and child. it is thru the great Spirit of God which uses me as its vehicle.we all have it in use to be vehicles for the Spirit,if we so desire.all we need do is ask.with total undoubting faith and yes, love.

Those I know who practice Shamanism count on nature as a whole and the spirits within nature for their power and their faith. It seems to be a decent, caring faith tradition.
