Hello,

A recent problem I've been experencing is that my Toyota will not shift out of park unless I turn on my lights. Once I turn on my lights, I can shift to drive, turn the lights off, and shift to anything else I want, as long as I don't put it in park again (at that point I would have to turn on the lights again).

Other info: It all started when all of my back lights went out. At that point, I couldn't shift out of park at all, even with the lights on. I replaced a fuse, the back lights came on, and then I could shift out of park only when I turn the lights on. Does anyone have any idea on why this would be happening?

Any help would be appreciated.

First, automatic tranmission Corrolas are setup so that you cannot shift the transmission out of park unless the brake is depressed. In order to sense this, in lock mechanism should be looking at the same switch the brake lights are looking at.

I am would assume that your issues go back to your tail light problem. When you fixed that, did you change any bulbs in the tailights? If you changed a bulb, odds are that is the problem and you used the wrong bulb. Turn on your headlights and then press your brakes while someone is watching your tail lights. Do the work? Did you change any other fuses? Odds are either the source that caused that fuse to blow or some collateral damage is causing your problem.

Hope that helps. These problems can be fun to diagnose!

I actual have a 2001 Hyundai accessory and had a 1989 Honda Civic. Honda is alot like Toyota. anyhow if i could %. between the two i might %. the Honda, the 01 Hyundai seems extra effective then the 89 civic, yet they're throw away vehicles, alot of them have problems after a hundred and fifty,000 miles and especially situations supply up. Toyotas have a extra effective risk, they could get as much as 315,000 miles based if it fairly is been serviced on a extensive-unfold foundation. Plus you wont see a ninety six Toyota for under $a million,4 hundred until something is heavily incorrect with it.
