I have 2 cats, and occassionally both of them will kind of freak out (ears perked up and tail swishing), lick themselves compulsively, run a few feet, stop, and lick comulsively again. It's almost like they have an itch thats driving them nuts. What is that all about? Dry skin maybe because of being inside during the winter? Any suggestions?

They don't have fleas.

thanks for all the answers, I love the "fairies" ones, I know exactly what you're talking about! They are indoor cats, but I play with them everyday so they get plenty of exercise. And they do the "run through the house" thing alot too, its the stop and lick thing that has me puzzled...

<--- My Cat Monte does this .. it's nothing to worrie about , when i spoke to my vet about it , she told me Sometimes cats like humans get pent up agression , thats why they run an skid across the Floor (atleast mine does.. lol) , as far as the itching .. it probaly is the weather , an the dry air inside , Try Burshing them everyday while your watching TV , it makes a huge difference ! .

Wanna see the cats Really run a muk .. Get em some cat nip ... Mine are Nip Heads !! (there my pic)

I take it that your kitties are indoor cats. Well I am thinking that the behavior you are describing is what all cat owners can relate to - the "midnight crazies" or in your case, the "crazies." This behvaior is brought on by pent up energy in the cat who does not have enough exercise or stimulation everyday. Cats like this will suddenly zoom up and down a hallway as if chasing something. You said your cats zoom and then stop and lick themselves. A cat that starts to do something then stops to lock himself is showing ambivelence or confusion. So, your cats want to release energy but are confused how to go about it. So I suggest you get a bunch of new toys that your kitty's can chase - feather teasers, laser lights, play mice, etc. You can also play a game of hide and seek or chase with them - I do that with my tw cats.

In short - give your cats more to do - they are BORED. and bored cats eventually become destructive cats.

You are going to think I am crazy and that is ok.
Do you believe in Faeries? My family is from the clan McLeod in
Scotland, and we believe in Faeries and sometimes they like to take rides on kitties!
No worries, all 3 of my cats do that. If you are concerned about it being dry skin see if they will eat tuna in oil. Not as a regular diet but as a treat maximum of once a week. In general, people tuna is not good for them. Or you can give them bacon dripping from the next time you fry some bacon.
Good luck and if they begin pulling their hair out take them to the vet because it could be an allergy.

Cats are all about neurotic behavior. Does your cat ever run like she has to be somewhere and she's late, then when she gets there she acts like where am I? Thats typical cat behavior. Get a string or some kind of ball (ping pong is best) this will give them a release for any pent up energy.

Hi there, it is always good to have kitty checked by your vet... but if they do not seem uncomfortable, or aggravated, i concur that they are just playing... my cats do all of a sudden go ripping through the house chasing the "cat fairies" i call them. Other folks call them the frenzies..... gently brush kitty if he likes it, and if he is happy, no need to worry.

I agree, take them to the vet, it could be a flea, dry skin, or your cats are just loko.

Our cats did this for a while, we flea commbed them, and they had fleas. brush them with a flea comb and see if you find anything, then go to your vet for diagnosis.

If there isn't anything medically wrong with them, they are just playing around........ may seem weird but to them it is fun!
You could research and see if there is anything that could help them with dry skin...... or ask your vet what they think.
Good luck
