What is the difference between and HDtv monitor and hdtv, and can i watch normal cable programming on it? I dont plan on subscribing to digital cable because the tv will be mostly used for movie viewing, but i would like to be able to watch normal cable as well. It says on the best buy ad a seperate receiver is needed to receive digital content. But will this monitor still function as a normal tv with just a regular cable signal?

I don't think so. You need a conventional analog "tuner" to connect to standard cable TV, because the cable channels are located throughout much of a 500 to 700 MHz band of TV channels that are sent to you over the cable. You would need to rent a "set top box" (tuner) from the cable company in order to hook your HDTV monitor up to the cable service. The HDTV monitor can accept either an all digital HDMI connection from a digital set top box, or an analog only video/audio connection from an analog tuner type set top box. A standard TV set can be hooked directly to digital cable service, but it will only receive a limited number of analog channels.
In summary, any TV monitor (HD or otherwise) doesn't have the RF Tuners in it that are necessary to tune the TV channels whether they originate off the air or via your cable TV or Satellite TV service. You need a set top box which contains the analog and/or digital tuners.
An "HDTV" contains the RF tuners, whereas an "HDTV monitor" doesn't.

you can still watch regular cable channels. digital cable will give you a better quality picture. What the best buy Ad means is that you need to get an HD reciever if you want to watch HD channels. Digital content is HD channels. And this TV you have is HD.

HDTV and HDTV monitor are the same thing.

Monitors don't have the tv tuner parts. Just the display. If you plan on getting component tv, that's fine, but you can't watch a montior without having a receiver.

Yes you can still get regular cable on your HDTV, it just means that it's capable of getting a higher resolution.
