How much does laser eye surgery cost and how risky is it?

I've been thinking about getting my vision corrected with laser. Does anyone know about how much it would cost and how risky it would be? (I currently have no medical conditions with my eyes except that I can't see anything beyond a foot of me)

The price is coming down. I had it done in 1999 and it was around $5.5K.

Don't listen to people telling you not to do it. The procedure was virtually painless and the newer methods are better than the one I had. I could see crystal clear, maybe 4 hours after surgery. Took a nap, woke up and could read my alarm clock across the room. I had worn glasses/contacts since 5th grade.

My eyesight is still excellent.

My brother had it done, cost him 4k, which I thought was REALLY expensive. On the other hand, I guess the words "cheap" and "my vision" really don't belong in the same sentence eh? He loves it, though his took about a week to clear up. At first he thought it didn't work.

I'd be REAL intense about checking out the dr I was thinking of using, want a lot of patient referrals, etc. Def not something I'd let some newbie do!

mine cost about 4K because of the type of procedure i needed (PRK vs Lasik), Lasik is cheaper...but like someone else said - they are your eyes, you don't want something like that to be cheap.
as for risky - depends on the person, same goes for how long it lasts or regresses (most everyones eyes change in their 40's)
and FYI there are no known cases of legal blindness.
do lots of research before you get it done on both the procedure and the surgeon preforming it.

its around 3 thousand dollars and is relatively safe. However, my father has had the surgery 3 times and relapsed each time. Your eyes may not accept the surgery which would cause you to either have it again or back to corrective wear.
