My 13 year old daughter tells me all the time that she wakes up in the middle of the night and it takes her forever to fall back to sleep...and she sometimes has difficulty falling to sleep to begin with. She's gotten frustrated with all my other suggestions, like calming music, chamomile tea, etc.

No, it is NOT cool to give a 13 y/o sleeping pills. There are many alternatives & for now, it'll be trial & error until you can come up with something that will enable her to fall asleep in a timely fashion & stay asleep. Not getting proper rest will soon affect her school work if it hasn't already. Are you monitoring her caffeine intake after dinner/before bedtime? Has she tryed a warm bath or shower just before bedtime? Has she tryed relaxing with a good book or her favorite magazine while curled up in bed? Maybe you could give her a relaxing back rub often before she goes to bed. It can be very theraputic. Have you tryed talking to her one on one to see if she's having problems in school in anyway? If all else fails, you need to take her to the doctor & see what advice he can give you. Good luck!

There are a few things you should try first. 1. remove caffeine from his diet 2. try exercise on a regular basis 3. Melatonin- is an OTC supplement which aides in sleep These are recommendations that a physician will make prior to prescribing medication. Drawback to getting a script from a doctor is that long term use can lead to dependence. AKA... he starts using sleeping pills at the age of 13, and he uses them regularly he will have trouble sleeping without them by the time he is 18. Hope this helps.

It's important to assess first Why she is facing this trouble; whether she has any other significant problems like anxiety, sadness or the like.
If medically indicated, sedatives Can be used, but of course under the supervision of a competent physician.

The best advise I can give you is to make an appointment with her physician. Tell the doctor about her insomnia and sleep pattern and let him make the decision, not you, as he is the one who went to medical school. You are not in any position to take it upon yourself to give your daughter sleeping medication. That's dangerous business! Please let her doctor advise you on that and I'm sure he'll let you know if it's safe enough for a young teenager.Only the Doctor knows best!!!!!!!

If it was my decision I would first try giving her some milk/icecream before bed. Calcium needs increase during teenage and other stages throughout life. Calcium has been touted to be nature's wonderful calming agent.

It is not cool and CPS could actually get involved and take your child from you. However, if you go to a doctor and the doc prescribes her something, that is different.

I think you really should consult her regular physician to see what is best for her, before you give her anything.

You can try giving her a half of tylenol pm, I think it will help alot.

Is it Cool? "Cool".... errr no, its not cool.

Does she get enough exercise?
Does she eat healthy?
Is she under some stress?

These are the questions you need to answer, not sedating her!
