During the Depression in the 1930's people were out of work and totally broke from the Great Crash. So soup kitchens were started mostly by churches. People would line up outside holding their pots to be able to get a free meal for them and their family. Lines would stretch for blocks in hopes of nourishment for their wives and kids. Sad, but true.

They are lines where, usually homeless, or street people line up to get food, which at one time was usually soup from a "soup kitchen". It was thought that they started in the depression in the 1930's when a lot of people lost just about everything and had to rely on to eat, just to survive.
