I should probably know this, but I need some outside insight.

What are the symptoms of depression? I know the classic symptoms (feeling helpless, losing interest in activities), but how do you know when it's not just feeling sad or blue?

The reason I ask is because for the past couple of months, I have been feeling pretty down, not wanting to do things with my friends, feeling worthless (esp. when it comes to taking care of the house/kids/husband), irritable, basically feeling like the world wouldn't miss me (not that I don't want to keep on living, but that no one would be affected if I had never been born).

The thing that throws me is that there are breaks where I do feel good and I am happy, but they only last for a week or so, and then I am back to feeling down again. Should I talk to a doctor about this, or are there some things I should try myself to feel better? It's starting to affect my job (I don't feel like doing anything at work) and my relationships, and I hate feeling this way.

Thanks!

You have all the classic symptoms of depression. Make an appointment with you doctor right away & explain in full detail how you're feeling. Getting better is a three fold procedure. (1) Ask your doctor to prescribe a mild antidepressant for you & take it daily, at the same time of the day or night. (2) Go for therapy & don't wait about picking up the phone & making the call. Once you schedule your first appointment with a therapist, do not miss any sessions. Perhaps your doctor can recommend someone for you to see.(3) Talk to your husband & tell him exactly how you're feeling & tell him how important it is to support you, where #1 & #2 are concerned. I was in your shoes not so long ago & I knew that how I was feeling wasn't normal, so I saw my doctor & he put me on Lexapro. I felt so much better & sooner than most of his patients did when they first started taking the Lexpro. Come to find out, I had seriously low levels of serotonin in my brain, thus, I was so depressed. I got therapy, took my medication, & went for a walk each day. In no time at all, I was feeling so much better. You will too, in time, just take my advice & do it soon. I wish you all the best.

You should go she a psychiatrist to treat you. You sound very depressed to me.You don't have to be depressed every minute of every day to have depression.
Ask yourself these questions:
Do I feel like sleeping all the time or not at all?
Is my appetite decreasing?
When I'm in a crowd ,do I still feel Alone?
Do I have thoughts of hurting myself or suicidal thoughts?
Do I sometimes cry for no real reason?
Besides all the other feelings you are having, add these to them and chances are you will see that you are depressed and need help. Take Care!!!!!!!

Look, First you must understand that you are unique and this world will miss you, because nobody, nothing can replace an individual, a person.
In my humble understanding I think that is normal to feel like that eventually but that is just a phase a trial in your life so you have to stand this.
I can imagine it is very hard for someone by itself, therefore look for help. Your closest relatives, your husband, a priest, a doctor, it depends on you. You must have someone you trust and also there are people who studied to deal with your feelings. Look for them and don't give up.
My resort is God, try to look for him.

The most important it is to start praying...read a good book! Did you hear about Jesus's prayer?
read this, please!

WE all live in this world that is suffering...and we suffer, too. Having a spiritual life, praying, giving our soul the "food" that he needs it it helps a lot!
Try to find some good books and read!

"The following of Christ" by Thomas a Kempis it is the second most read book, after the Bible.

1.Headaches. Headaches and migraine headaches are fairly common in people with depression. If you already had migraine headaches, they may become worse if you?re depressed.
2.Back pain. If you already suffer with back pain, it may get worse if you become depressed.
3.Muscle aches and joint pain. Depression can make any kind of chronic pain worse.
4.Chest pain. It?s very important to get chest pain checked out by an expert right away.
5.Digestive problems. Queasiness, nausea, diarrhea and chronic constipation can all stem from depression.
6.Exhaustion and fatigue. No matter how much you sleep, do you still feel tired and exhausted? Fatigue and depression are not a surprising pair.
7.Sleep disturbances. People with depression often have difficulty falling asleep, or awaken in the early hours of the morning and find themselves unable to get back to sleep.
8.Change in appetite or weight. Several studies have found excess weight to be linked with depression symptoms, a history of depression, and other measures of psychological distress (e.g. anxiety).

Definitely go to the doctor, it could be a more serious problem. He should do some blood work on you to narrow down what could be causing you to feel this way.

Sometimes it can be as simple as vitamin deficiencies.
Try some B vitamins in the morning and magnesium at night

This site has a really good B for depression

You should seek professional advice, rather than just the advice of strangers on the Internet. Seriously.
