If my husband is the only working parent in the house and he made roughly $25,000 last year I think that he can file head of household. My question is how much can you possibly get back for that?

Head of Household is a special filing status for single parents. The rate for Married filing Joint is actually a little better. Here is a real good article about Head of Household. http://www.internet-taxprep.com/plindex.asp?welcome=WU9900641&page=taxguide/text/c60s10d040.asp

The easiest way to figure this stuff out is to use an on-line tax program. Also, you can see how much you are getting back before you pay.

I like this one because it donates part of your fee to charity.

Don't use turbotax, they get your numbers wrong.

A married person living with their spouse can NOT file as head of household. Their choices are a joint return with their spouse, or married filing separately. If the spouse isn't working, married filing joint would definitely be better. They file this way even though only one has income.

With two kids, and an income of $25000, filing jointly, you shouldn't owe any tax so should get back anything that was withheld for federal income tax. You should also get an Earned Income Credit of around $2800.

The best thing you can do is go to www.taxact.com and sign up for the FREE system for you to prepare and e-file your taxes. They will walk you through everything step by step, even the filing status. You can also put it in both ways and see how you get the bigger refund. If you direct deposit your refund, you can have it in two to three weeks and it if totally free! (I know I used it!)

No, you can't file as head of household. You must file as married.
