My boyfriend is a Marine on deployment overseas. He said he's been breaking out on his face, arms, and back with bumps that look like little mosquito bites. He also says he thinks he is losing hair. What could possibly be going on?

He is mainly on a ship but they recently stopped in Sicily and Turkey, and now they're on their way to the middle east. He went to see the doctor on board, but they dont know what it is.

It could be a number of things, but your boyfriend should get his thyroid checked and also be tested for lupus if he is losing hair and has unexplained skin rashes. I would take tell him to take pictures of the rash on his face especially and for him to go to a dermatologist as quickly as possible. I had a heat related illness from working in a foundry and the rash was never raised. It did cause burning skin pain and fatigue though.

It could be ringworm. It starts with little red bumps that look like tiny mosquito bites and itch, then enlarges into the ring shaped red rash. He could have ringworm of his scalp, which would cause the hair to fall out.

He needs to keep going back to sick bay on a daily basis so they can monitor his condition and find a diagnosis and treatment.

Well, I can't make a diagnosis based on just that, but if he's deployed in a desert country, what you're describing sounds like it could be due to sandfly bites, though it doesn't explain allopecia (hair loss). Whatever the case, it's probably worthwhile for him to go and see a doctor who can take a thorough history about it.

This could be anything from an allergic rash to actual bites to signs of a bigger (non-skin) problem.

I don't know. The same thing happened in the Gulf War, but I forget what was causing it. You can bet the good old USA is responsible, though!
