I was just wondering this in my flight home from california as the meal was BBQ chicken. it had never crossed my mind before and i don't think i will be able to sleep until i find out!!!

What?? You got fed on a flight??? How wonderful! Gawd all i ever get is a small bag of peanuts! However, your question is valid. Most of the chicken served is from hens. Roosters are mostly used for procreation of the species..therefore..only a few are needed. The hens are fattened. Enjoy your bbq'ed hen.

Definately female. Yer one of them city folk, huh? Rest easy. Roosters (males) are just basically the pimps of the chicken world. Hens (hence the name chicks?) carry the burden of egg production, mothering, and sometimes being pressed into little nuggets for you and I to enjoy.
