I need to be prepared for her death as I love her so! I am giving her fish oil tabs - any other heart healthy tips would also be welcomed! Thanks!

What does her vet say about her care and life expectancy?

The short answer is no, she won't just "drop dead." But she may have a shorter life span than a healthy pet. Heart murmurs aren't necessarily a death sentence.

Depending on the grade of the heart murmur (1-6, 6 being the worst) the dog may get winded more easily, you may see panting/ coughing with very little activity, or possibly generalized lethargy if the murmur is bad enough.

What will eventually happen (years down the road) is fluid buildup in the lungs. This is the problem with heart murmurs. What you will see is coughing, trouble breathing, and lethargy. At this point, you can usually put your hand on the dog's chest and feel an extremely large, strong heartbeat. This is due to the heart muscle growing much larger than normal due to the extra effort.

Until then, the best thing for your dog is to give her a wonderful, loving home in which to be as happy as possible for the rest of her long life.

Depending on the degree of the murmur, they CAN drop dead. Fish oil will NOT help a heart murmur.
Find out WHY the dog has a murmur and what the prognosis is. A vet cardiologist can tell you all these things. Many dogs can live normal lives, but many do not.
Get the information!!!!

Animal science has come a long way in the last few years. A heart murmur does not mean an early death any longer. As others has posted, see a vet you trust and DON'T WORRY.

I, too, am sorry to take heed to of Casey's passing. this is puzzling for each man or woman, yet probable greater so for Holly, as she's by no skill customary an afternoon without Casey. She does certainly ought to grieve, and it ought to take lots longer than each and every week! I have been given my puppy from a breeder while she grew to become into 18 months previous, and it took her 2 months to recover from the shortcoming of her p.c... inspite of the incontrovertible fact that, she did save eating and eating by using that element. confirm Holly is staying bodily wholesome as she recovers from her loss. And this is probable too undesirable she did no longer see Casey's physique. canines do understand dying. I observed that first-hand while our canines sniffed the physique of their lost buddy. One tucked her tail and retreated into the residing house. the different sent out an prolonged, mournful howl (the only time i've got ever heard him howl). good now Holly could be puzzled besides as depressed, questioning why Casey has left her. sturdy success. dropping a puppy is so no longer hassle-free.

I have an older dog that has had one for years - I wouldn't worry about it. Just try to give her exercise and try to control her weight

If you have to ask about this it's better to ask it to a vet instead.
