A clove is what you break off the whole head of garlic. They're "individually wrapped" if you will in their peel. To peel them, smash them with the side of a knife and the peel will slip right off.

in the produce section of your local grocery store, you should be able to find a whole bulb of garlic. it is a flower bulb shaped item found in the onion area, with a white papery husk. if you were to peel back the papery outsides, you would see that the bulb is made up of several small, individually "wrapped" pieces - referred to as "cloves."
the easiest way to peel a clove of garlic is to lay one clove on a cutting board, cover it with the flat side of a kitchen knife (like a chef's knife or a cleaver) and strike the top flat side of the knife with the heel of your hand. this will partially crush the clove of garlic, and will split the peel making it easier to remove. this crushing technique also does some of the chopping work for the cook as well.

The easiest way is to purchase a garlic press. You can get them at any kitchen store or major retailer. You don't even have to peel the clove when you put it in. Just press and out comes the good stuff.

If you buy a garlic bulb at the grocery, you will find that there are a number of layers of papery skin. If you remove the outer ones, you will find inside several separate sections. These are the "cloves". Often, garlic is used in cooking by mashing one of these cloves in a garlic press, and adding the resulting paste to the food.

A clove of garlic is one of the buds that you pull off of the garlic bulb. To peel, lay it on a hard flat surface. Take a large knife and place flat against the garlic. Hit the knife hard with the palm of you hand. The skin should be easily removed if it hasn't already come off!

A clove is one of those little sections shaped like a teardrop. You can loosen the peel by hitting the clove with the wide flat side of a broad-bladed knife. Or with the flat of a pancake-turner --(works for me) . Once the papery stuff is loose, it slips off pretty easily.
