My Doctor says my son will need tubes in his ears? What does this mean? He was busy today so didnt have much time to explain it all to me. I know its used to drain etc..but how long do they stay in? Will it effect his balance or anything?

My son got tubes in his ears last year, since than we haven't had anymore ear infections. They usually "fall out" in a year or so. The procedure is very simple. He may be a little cranky after, but he should be okay. I have not had any problems from it, but each child is different, and if your Dr did not take the proper time to explain the procedure and it pros and cons, maybe you should seek an second opinion.

They don't really look like tubes it is more like a grommit. They will sedate your child and place the grommit thing in the ear drum to open the middle ear to the outer eat so it can drain. They tend to fall out on their own with 18-24 months of being placed. If not a doctor will just go in and pull it out of the ear. None of this is painful to your child. The day the tubes are placed in your childs ear they will have more effects from the sedation then the procedure. They will be tired and a bit cranky, just some extra love and special foods and movies, time in bed with momma and dadda will take care of most of it.

The tubes are used to keep passages open in the eardrum so that fluid, blood, pus, etc can drain freely. Depending on the age when they are inserted, they fall out on their own (you probably won't know or see, lol) from 6-18 months after they are inserted. Depending on the child's ear problems at that point, they may or may not be redone. Across my 3 kids, they have had 11 sets and they are a God-send.

They affect balance only in that if your child has had balance problems related to excessive fluid, etc-the balance problems will vanish when the tubes are inserted (assuming no serious infections causing vertigo, etc).

On the plus side, when he has an ear infection from now on, you'll catch on pretty quick-you'll see it, lol. Good luck-it's worth the time and the money if your child has had frequent problems.

MY SON HAD TUBES IN HIS EARS. ITS A QUICK SERGURY. THEY PUT THE TUBES IN WITH NO SCAR YOU WONT EVEN NOTICE THERE IN. THEN ABOUT TWO YEARS LATER THEY FALL OUT ON THERE OWN. IT WONT EFFECT NOTHING HE WILL JUST HEAR A LITTLE LOUDER THEN HE IS USE TO SO LOUD NOISES MIGHT SCARE HIM. WHEN HE TAKES A BATH HE WILL NEED EAR PLUGS SO NO WATER GETS IN THE TUBES.

don't do it, get a second opinion, the tubes cause more problems then the ear infections they are suppose to help
