You don't need to numb anything when you get it pierced. In fact, when I got mine pierced, the most uncomfortable part of the whole thing was the following week or so when it was swollen as heck. The actual piercing part was a breeze.

When I had my tongue done last year, here is how the process went. Nothing was used to specifically numb the area------but the pain was (on a scale from 1-10being alot) I would rate about a 2.
1-rinse mouth with Listerine mouthwash
2-dried tongue off with thick paper towel
3-marked both sides of tounge & I checked in mirror
4-used the very sharp piercing needle to go thru (little to no pain)
5-put in starter barbell (about 1" long to allow for swelling)
6-had me rinse with mouthwash again and check in mirror
------and thats all.
Just be sure to use an antiseptic mouthwash after you eat or drink anything other than water or if you smoke. If you are feeling it swell a bit----suck on ice whenever possible. I was wearing a regular tongue ring by my 3rd day-----but everyone is different.

Hope everything works out for you.

I would not attept to pierce your tongue yourself even after reasearch. The local anesthetic only helps with the initial stick it is just like the oragel you use for kanker sores or toothaches. The swelling and throbing after a tongue peircing can last for hours even days. I am sure you are creative. Find a way to let a proffesional do the job. There are veins and nerves in your tougue and a pro can help you figure out the best placement for it, it may not be where you think. I went out of town and I had an older sibling sign for me. They never asked him to prove he was an older sibling. He really was and that was a few years ago but maybe that would work for you. Please try to find away to see a pro you'll be glad you did.

You're not SUPPOSED to numb where you're getting pierced! You want your tongue pierced... get it done like a man (or woman!). Even if you DID numb it... it won't help you chew your food the next day, or try to talk without sounding like a moron for a few days. Oh yea, and even after your healed, pray to GOD you don't bite the tongue ring while eating M&M's. ouch!

my guy used clove oil.. it not only numbed my tongue, it numbed my whole mouth!!! Trouble is.. it only numbs on the surface.. so you still feel the deep tissue pain.
