my friend wants to bleach out her hair, she called me over to help but I cant help but wonder if her hair is too oily for the dye to work. If she washes it today though, she also cant dye it because some of those oils need to be there. My question is can I put the dye in her hair as it is? Should she wash it today and dye it tomorrow? Or maybe is there something she can do like blowdry and brush her hair to make it less oily?

Dye is actually safest on dirty hair - the natural oils protect the shaft from the harshness of the dye. Now, bleaching is another story, not much will protect hair from bleach, but it shouldn't matter how oily it is, cuz the dye should still work.

She should wash it in the morning and dye it that same evening but not use products such as hair spray or styling mousse that day. That will give her hair enough time to build the necessary natural oils for dying but not as much as would build up over night which would inhibit the reactors in the dye.

Actually, brushing your hair stimulates the scalp and causes more oils in your hair. (that's why people used to do the 100 strokes for shinier hair) Blowdrying only causes the ends to be dryer but the extra heat can do the same as brushing causing the hair closest to her scalp to produce more oils.

It shouldn't be too oily. Hair dye works best in dirty hair.
