Service Pack is kinda of like a patch released. When bugs are found in the operating systems (Like Windows XP) the company release the service pack so the bugs can be fixed. This results in extra security. Usually Microsoft releases Service Pack's when they find something wrong in the OS, usually like the OS being vulnerable to attacks. It is not really necessary to install them but if your concerned about your privacy and security you better download and install them. Note that Service Pack 2 is already released for Windows XP. You are sure to find more info in the Microsoft Website.

Service Pack 1 is the first service pack for XP, and there's already a second one, which you should download.

Configure your computer for auto-updates, and you'll get it automagically on XP. If this is on Windows 2000 or 2003 then it may be a different version, but you should always have the latest Service Packs and Updates, mostly for security reasons.
