By sexual contact (e.g. HIV)
By wounding (e.g. bitten by rabid animal)
By insect bite (West nile virus)
They can also be tranfered throught the placenta in rare cases (again, HIV or HCV)

Some are air born. This time of year such as influenza, others are passed through body fluids, If you are worried. Good hand washing especially when you go out in public. Before you eat, I think grocery carts carry a lot of germs and viruses

there are a number of ways which are entirely dependant on the virus in question. it could be spread via air, exchange of bodily fluids, animal vectors etc.
