There is a word to describe the most efficient way of packing items into a space and I forget what it is. I'm looking for more information on this science if anybody can point me in the right direction?

Believe it or not, it's called "the packing problem", and it's part of combinatorial or computational complexity theory. Just google "packing problem" for information on it. Here's a wiki article to get you started:
