I have had my Green Card for over six years, and now I want to become a US citizen. Please advise one the procedures and the cost. Thx!

Look to apply for citizenship. Go to www.uscis.gov You have to fill out an application which has a fee of $330, and then there are your biometrics which costs $70. The total is $400. Then you have to pass a test which you must score at least 85% on. The uscis site has 144 sample questions which would be asked for the citizenship tests. After you have completed these three (3) processess then you will become eligible to take the oath to become a US citizen and then you are eligible to receive an US passport.

Congradulations on your decision to become a citizen. My husband just did this. He applied for citizenship in November and was sworn in on the 23rd of January. So he is still a brand new citizen and wishing for an election to come about so he can vote.
What you need to do is fill out a N-400 and supply them with all the documents that are required including two passport style photos. In about 30 days or less you will receive a receipt letter and then you will receive an appointment for your fingerprints quickly after that. Within one month you will receive an appointment for your interview and test. When you go for fingerprints they will give you a book that helps you study for the test. You must be able to write in English at least moderately and they will ask you about 20-25 questions on history and civics. Know about the flag. Know about our national song which is the Star Spangled Banner. Know about the original 13 colonies and know about our system of government and how it works. Know the differences between the rights of citizens and the rights of permenent residents. Good luck...oh and if you have family such as children that aren't citizens yet...they derive citizenship from you automatically, whether they are in the US or in a foreign country.
You do not need help to fill out the form. It is simple and don't waste your money on 'notaries' they aren't lawyers.

Look for your local chapter of the catholic charities and they will walk you through it. It's about 350 dollars or so...It's been a while since i did it. That is just for the gov. forms and it takes about 6 months.

I believe if you go to your nearest government agency they would be very willing to help you. Or you could try the library
