A split is actually NOT a half bottle of Champagne. A bottle is .75 liters and can serve 6 flutes of champagne. A half bottle is just, a half bottle...

Splits are actually "quarts", which is actually half a half bottle, some Champagne producers are doing quarts (splits) now (it is now "cool" to drink a quart with a straw at some parties).

Wine tidbits has actually a nice chart that show you the name of the bottles:
http://www.uncork.com.au/tidbits0.htm
Or:
http://www.french-wines.com/champagne.htm

And for those who care here is the complete list:
Split 187 ml.
H-bottle .375 ml.
Bottle 750 ml.
Magnum 2 bottles
Jeroboam 4 bottles
Rehoboam 5 bottles
Methuselah 7 bottles
Salmanazar 10 bottles
Balthazar 13 bottles
Nebuchadnezzar 16 bottles
