You enlist in the Coast Guard... you go thru Basic Training... and then you go to Rescue Swimmer School.

Newly enlisted personnel are sent to eight weeks of Basic Training at Coast Guard Training Center Cape May in Cape May, New Jersey. The United States Coast Guard's airborne "Rescue Swimmers" are trained at its enlisted Aviation Survival Technician / Rescue Swimmer school in Elizabeth City, North Carolina.

And to be a Rescue Swimmer you better be DAMNED motivated !!

I went through Navy RSS at NAS Pensacola, FL back in 1986 (when the coasties used our school). We started our class with 82 students, and graduated 12 of us.
