New York is a relatively safe city, especially since Giuliani cleaned up the mess that fool Dinkins made .. but..do you wan to hear something scary?
Every single person I know that has lived in NYC for more then a few years has been mugged. Most of them were minor, meaning they were not hurt , but still enough to shake them up.
Avoid Central Park after dark, avoid Harlem or points in the south bronx at night.
And by all means,if they have a weapon or could overpower you easily, just give up what they want. Not worth getting stabbed or shot over.

Lived in NYC for 10 years and was never mugged, or knew anyone who was mugged. I walked through Harlem at 2 am, and Central Park at midnight. It is safer then it gets credit for.

New York is one of the safest cities in the US. Muggings happen. It's part of urban life. Washington, DC has the highest crime rate in the country. The local joke is: You can get shot in front of a police station, and the cops still wouldn't know what happened.

A friend of mine had his phone ripped off him while he was near Time Square.
He chased after the guy who ran a couple of blocks before throwing the phone back at my mate and running off.
Nobody stopped to help, but they did ask if my friend was OK.
