I am not vain by any means, I am more just curious why is it that most of the time when a guy goes gray, the gray/white hair starts to show at the temples or above the ears? (I got a haircut yesterday and REALLY noticed the new gray hairs showing...)

At the beginning of the graying process, follicles produce colorless strands in a random pattern. For unknown reasons, the first gray or white strands usually appear on your temples and the top of your head.

Your hair doesn't actually "turn" gray -- it grows in this way. Every day, hairs fall out and new ones replace them. At any given time, about 85% to 90% of your hairs are actively growing, while the rest are in a resting state.

Thats why I stay out of Temples.
Okay, I was trying for a chuckle - but hey, I'm starting to get gray hair but its scattered here and there, not at the temple area. Even so, many men start graying in the temple area.

This may sound stupid (and maybe it is) but I have always noticed they say premature gray hair is a result of worrying AND what do people do when they are stressed? Rub the temple areas. Just making an observation here.

The Sun plays an important role in this. Just as the Sun lightens hair it steals the properties of pigment. I always wore my shirt open and noticed a perfect gray V on my chest, where the sun shined.

The same is true for the head , where your hat doesn't cover.

The hair follicles on the side of the head are not as rich as the ones on top, so they loose their color first. LOL Not really, but it sounded good anyway. I don't know why. Ask a doctor.
