the lines themselves are grid lines (the grid you see)

"rows" go side to side
(they are numbered with numbers 1, 2, 3, etc)

"Columns" stretch up and down
(they are numbered with letters a, b, c, etc

Each location you enter data in is called a cell
(indicated by a matching letter number combo.)
(A1 is the leftmost upper cell)
(A2 is the second from the left topmost cell...etc.)

Gridlines is the technical name
They can also be turned off as well:

↓ Excel
↓ Tools
↓ Options
↓ Remove the tick from the Gridlines box
