Do not pay the collections agent, pay the actual creditor ASAP in full. If the collections agent contacts you again give them the payment information, date, amount, check number.

I would have to say that if it is an old debt, it has already been reported every month you didn't pay it before they sent it to collections. Unless the collections department is at the medical location, I would have to say you can only talk to the collection and not the medical facility. Once they send it, they no longer take payments on it.

speak with the collection agency. Just because it hit a collection agency does not necessarily mean it has gone against your credit report.

Talk to the collection agency and ask them. Talk to the hospital and ask them.

The local library in my home town will send you to collections for overdue book fees. It is funny getting a collection notice for 3.50 cents.
But just because it has hit collections does not mean it is on your credit report. If you don't pay then it will more then likely end up on your report. I believe they have to give you time before they ding your credit.

Ask questions.

Pay the original creditor in full and when you receive the letter from the collection agency request "validation". They have to verify the debt is paid before listing it on your reports and pursuing collection activity. Once they find out it is they cannot list it. Simply write:

"I dispute your claim and request validation of this debt. This bill has already been paid in full."

Keep copies of your receipt just in case.

It has already "gone to your credit". How you handle it now is what will effect your credit. If you pay it it will be a plus. If you don't it will be a minus. Pay the collection.
