If the people you asked live in a village that has a pond they would'nt know much. If the pond has some grassland the ducks will hop onto it or play follow the leader to some bodies garden. Where i live is a duck pond which has an island in the middle with reeds and rushes and thats where they stay if the pond freezes.

Usually they huddle with a set of friends and they keep a small area of the pond open for drinking and safety. They will also stay near the edge of the pond where the ice is thinner.
Help them to survive this winter and take some deer corn and fresh bread and give them a free meal. Please?

They migrate to where the pond isn't frozen over. You've heard the phrase, "flying south for the winter" ?

That would be why. No lakes iced over down here in So. Cal.

get cold. i actually think they stay in the reeds. this is clutching at straws but i think the wate around reeds in ponds doesn't freeze over. I remember as a kid sliding along the ice on top of our local pond. but near the centre around the reeds was not frozen.

Just an idea.....

They hug the sides of the pond and patiently wait for spring.
Take some fresh bread and deer corn to a place where you know they are and give them a free meal!

they get stuck in the pond and try to fly away, and they all end up taking the lake with them....seriously. And ducks dont fly south....geese do.....Either that or they just chill out in the grass and the woods and sleep.

Ducks are migratory. They are smart enough to head south so they don't have to deal with frozen ponds.

Sometimes they are stuck, but usually they have flown elsewhere for the Winter. Our ducks and geese were trying to tell us something here in Oklahoma this fall. They were flying NORTH for the Winter... no one knew why...... But now we do!!! It's sooo cold here!!!!

freeze their freaking little webbed toes off...
Actually, the ones in the pond out back just hang around on the bank and gobble the corn we put out for them.
