Grit is either small gravel sold in pet store, or part of a corn kernel used for making an hot breakfast dish. If you are referring to the former, it is something that we give chickens to aid digestion, and it is not necessary for either of your species of birds to have it (despite information frequently given by petstore employees). Furthermore, if they eat too much, it can actually cause problems. If it the breakfast type you are referring to, they can have it as a tasty treat, but as it is high energy, high carbohydrate food, too much, and you'll end up with a fat bird! You also should offer lots of vegetables (such as parsley and broccoli) and a little fruit to your pets to get some good nutrients to them as well. Also, diluting the seed mix with some parakeet pellets is also a good idea.
A cuttlebone is usually recommended as a calcium source for birds. Mineral blocks are not usually necessary if you feed a wide variety of vegetables.

I have been breeding Budgies and Cockatiels for years and Kimmie is absolutely right, Cockatiels and budgies DO NOT need shell grit, it can cause all kinds of trouble, and even kill them if they eat to much. Some birds need it to help digest their food but not Cockatiels or budgies. Cuttlebone and a mineral block are fine. Also feed them some fruit and veggies, but never chocolate, avocado( poison to birds) salt or caffeine. Have a look at www.cockatielcottage.net

After umpteen years of marriage, I can say true love is many things, some singly and others collectively. True love prefers the spouse above all other relationships. True love lasts no matter the mood or circumstances. True love is merciful and kind. Scripture talks about love. God's love is spiritual, but you will be interested in what scripture has to say: 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 New International Version (NIV) 4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Galatians 5:22-23 New International Version (NIV) 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.

Cuttle bone or minreal blocks are important it you are feeding a seed diet. It gives added minerals nad calcium that is not in the weak seed diet.

Grit is not the cooked kind, though birds love that. (I used to feed the lumps of cream of wheat to my ringneck.) Grit is small pieces of gravel that is sold in pet stores with the idea that bird would swallow it to help grind up their food in their crops. Grit is not really necessary. Some birds will eat a little of it, but mine never did and never missed it when I stopped offering it. They were always happy and healthy with fat and healthy babies. I'd skip it if it were me.

Grit is crushed up shells or tiny stones.

Birds eat it to sit in their crop so it grinds up the seed and food they eat before it goes to their stomachs so their food digests properly.

Cuttle bone and mineral blocks are awesome for all birds - your a good owner for providing all these things!

I'll never offer any of my birds grit again. Grit is little tiny stones that some say "benefits" the birds by crushing thier food for them.

According to my avian vet, grit can KILL your bird.

Since they can't pass it through their stomachs, it sits in their crop (food pouch at base of throat) and accumulates. Eventually there's no room for food, birds lose weight and die of malnutrition.
There is a ton of information online about CURRENT parrot care (all hookbills!!!!) please do some research and DO NOT OFFER YOUR BIRDS SAND/GRIT !!!

Birds don't have teeth so they need gravel grit to ground their food for them. Birds have a sack right above their breast where the food goes so they need the grit to ground it up. Chickens, birds, and most fowl have, I think it's called a craw.

Parakeets need grit - tiny gravel - to aid in the digestion of their food - put some in a little dish in their cage, they like to sit and nibble on it.
