Keeping the dog so the owners can bury it it a good gesture but, even deceased dogs will start to smell really bad. So I suggest perhaps you could go ahead and bury the dog, then put up a flyer around the area in which you accidentally hit the dog inquiring if someone has lost a dog but make sure you list the breed, color, size, etc.... and how they can contact you. Then when and if the owner comes forward you can explain what happened. If no one comes to claim the fact that the poor dog was theirs then you at least know you gave the poor little dog a descent burial.

Bury the dog yourself. Sometimes it's better that a family think their pet was picked up by a concerned person than to know that he/she met a horrible fate.
On a health note.....you can't keep a dead animal in a box in your basement for too long. The body will begin to break down and you will have one really stinky and messy situation on your hands.
The best thing you can do for this poor animal is to bury it.
if you really feel the owners will be better off knowing of a bad fate for their loved pet, then post a sign that you hit a dog in your front yard with a description of the dog. You'll probably get some wierd looks and comments though.
BTW......slow down, especially in neighborhoods. Besides the hazard of animals, you wouldn't want to hit a child!
God Bless.

Of course, try to find the owner. Ask around the neighborhood if anyone is missing a dog of that description. If you find the owner then simply explain to them what happened and how terrible you feel about it. Let them know thaty ou have his/her remains if htey would like to give him/her a proper burial.
Also, a hint of advice, if you are keeping the dog until you find the owner, keep him/her somewhere very cool or you will begin to experience an unwanted odor.

You should contact your local SPCA or Animal Control Office to see if someone has filed a missing dog report that matches that dog's description. I commend you on trying to find the owner, most people would have just left the dog on the side of the road.

Let me get this straight:
You DECADENTLY ran over the dog?
And you know who the owner is and your keeping their dead dog in your basement? For how long has this been going on?
You need to go knock on their door and let them know what you did. Perhaps it wasn't your fault, or perhaps since you enjoyed it so much (DECADENTLY?!) you was. In any case they need to know.
I would recommend you bring a second person to witness/assist if things get testy. People don't take it kindly when you run over their dogs even if it was their own fault for letting the dog run loose. But they really don't like it when you run over their dog DECADENTLY.

Just bury the dog or have a vet cremate it and then and if you find out later who's dog you can give them the ashes and replace the dog then.
