Fantastic question. I starred it.
What I think is an incredible double standard is that we're having a civil conversation about the fact that the bible says a woman should cover her head. People aren't saying, "Christians hate women, they oppress them, etc, etc."
Catholic nuns and Muslim women dress much the same way, but once Islam is introduced into the mix, all of the sudden it's oppression. I commend you all for the civil discourse. I wish those that visited Islamic questions would have the same decency.

Head covering for women is showing submission by God's arrangement. God appointed males to take the lead/charge in teaching God's words in the congregations. Sometimes, some lands that do not have a baptized male to fulfill the role assigned only to male, then a qualify/baptize woman can fill in but to show submission she wears head covering for taking the role that was supposed to be assigned to male. Another example is when a wife is having a bible study with another woman in front of a baptized male or her own husband, she wears head covering to show that she is doing things in God's arrangement and in doing that the wife uphold her husband's integrity to God. Jehovah's Witnesses practice this because it is from the Bible and for Christians.

This is what is happening to many many Christian beliefs. People pick and choose what to believe and what not to believe. It’s almost to a point that I don’t think Christians are actually Christians anymore. Their religion has become so vague that maybe it should be called something else.
I still think most Christians are good people and if they actually thought of what it teaches in the bible they would no longer worship it. Most Christians do not want to stone an adulterer to death and do not want to treat women as lesser humans. Unfortunately all religious people have been thought at a young age to have blind faith and not to ask questions.

It was always a cultural custom. Long, beautiful hair was considered provocative in ancient Greco-Roman culture, and head coverings were just an outword symbol of modesty. Some Christian communities still observe this custom, and it still conveys the same meaning. It is not mandatory in my denomination, but several women practice it anyway. My advice is to stay away from any Church that mandates head coverings, but feel free to wear one yourself. It was never a sign of submission or anything like that - just modesty.
An example of the same thing is a bracelet worn across the forehead. It doesn't mean anything now, but in Byzantine culture it was a sign used by prostitutes. So, such styles were discouraged in the Churches.

I am a traditional Catholic and many if not all women cover their heads during church. You don't have to go overboard and wear a complete head covering, most just wear hats, but its the way it been for a LONG time, men take off there hats in church, women cover their heads. And yesI'm a guy and it's inconvenent to take off my hat for church but I do it anyway.

My godmother used to wear her little head covering to church religiously (no pun intended) but she said once Vatican II hit with all the transformations people just stopped doing it, deeming it too old-fashioned and not having any real merit. However, with the return to Latin masses (since Vatican II) by far right-wing Catholics, the head coverings are starting to re-emerge. If you ever watch Mass on EWTN you can catch glimpses of a few here and there...

I was told when I was a child, that a woman's hair is her covering.
But, God doesn't care if you wear a hat, a bandana, shave your head, let it grow to the ground or color it blue.
These are rules that man has made. Forget that.
Jesus came to set us free from all those binding rules and regulations.
If you want to wear a head covering -- go for it. But, you are doing it for man, not for God.
He doesn't care what's on your head, only what's in your heart.

when Paul talked about head covering he was writing to a church that included ex-prostitutes who's heads had been shaved the idea to cover the head of all women was so they did not stand out. I think it is free will if you wish to you may but there is no compulsion.

1 Corinthians 11:4-5
4Every man who prays or prophesies with his head covered dishonors his head. 5And every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head—it is just as though her head were shaved.
good question. i think its because people forget/ignore that verse and pretend it really doesnt matter.

Man has determined in his superior wisdom that some things in the bible should be enforced and others shouldn't.
