I am with texelgirl as I feed my cats a raw meat home prepared diet. Some of them also eat canned food - Natural Balance, Wellness and Lick Your Chops - occasionally I pick up a few extra cans of something like Avoderm, etc. I like By Nature's Organic and am waiting for a local store to start stocking it.
I have one cat who eats only dry food - she has Natural Balance, CA Natural, Solid Gold and I rotate the bags around mostly among those three.
My cats don't throw up hairballs or have intestinal upsets. Quality in cat food is very important for healthy cats. The foods mentioned above are all at least 60% meat protein which is the cat's natural diet.
A raw diet is not all that hard to do. You can get good information from texelgirl's site, also from www.catinfo.com and www.catnutrition.com You must use meat that has no hormones or antibiotics. I mix up ground turkey, turkey heart and liver or ground chicken, chicken heart and chicken liver with a supplement powder and salmon capsules like a meatloaf and freeze it in muffin tins and then put in a large plastic bag in the freezer to thaw out on a daily basis as needed. I have done this for seven years for as many as seven cats. So it is really not all that hard to do and would be a breeze for just one cat.

I definitely feed my cats Nutro... it's all about the ingredients. Purina foods do not offer wholesome ingredients as the main source of nutrition, but rather fillers such as corn. This leads to bigger and smellier poops - and sometimes even excess gas. EWW!
Have you tried switching FLAVORS for your cat? I know that Nutro makes a few different flavors to choose from. Maybe he just needs a little variety. I would definately keep with feeding him a good-quality diet and not just give in to feeding him Purina because he likes it (I like cheesy-poofs, but wouldn't eat them all the time).
There are many different brands of GOOD QUALITY foods available at Petco and Petsmart - take a look around and read a few ingredient labels. Find one that is comparable to Nutro and buy the smallest bag to see if your cat will like it. If he does, you've found your cat a new food without compromising his health or nutrition.
Good luck!

I use to give my cats and dogs Purina but my dog started having stomach problems and my vet told me that it was from the Purina. She said that Purina and other cheaper bands are just fillers and it is hard to digest. She said that either Iams or Science Diet is the best food to give your pets. I opted for Iams because it is a little cheaper and my dog is happy & health, so all my animals get Iams. I am not sure about the cat food but when I switched the dog's food he didn't want to eat it. So I bought this sauce that Iams makes. I goes over the food and comes in bacon, beef, or chicken flavored and is good for there coat. Once I put that on his food he couldn't get enough.

My cats when little used to eat science diet and then they stopped liking it too, so now I give them a mixture of Purina indoor cat and meow mix hairball control and in between sometimes a little can food salmon or tuna flavor just to treat them. It isnt that bad since one of them is very slim and healthy and the other that tends to eat more is a little on the chunky side.

I use a all natural diet called the B.A.R.F diet. Biologically Appropriate Raw Foods. I make it myself then mix a cup of Sensible Choice Adult cat foods into it. Never had a problem with health, hairballs, or allerigies since i started this diet 5 years ago. Cats keep a healthy weight, no dietary or dental issues, no runny poops, and poop less smelly and often. I have 4 cats usually but can have up to 10 at one time when i foster.

Purina Naturals is really good for cats. It has vitamins, minerals and natural ingredients in it. I also feed my cats, Purina One, Science Diet, Iams. The cheap no-name brands are really crappy and not that great for them.
