Seeing it from the biological point of view, it depends on a whole lot of factors.(Considering that the elephant is male)
1) If there's a female elephant bathing there, then he might not.

(He will have to come out eventually as he is a land animal and cannot remain in the water for very long)
2) If the elephant is a homosexual, then he may well want to come back, because to he would be shy to show off his private parts to the opposite sex.
(Considering that the elephant is male a female is already present at the pond)

There won't be much water left in the pond when the elephant goes in... So he should not face any difficulty in getting out :)

why he do need to come back as pond is not so deep it is of no use for him so let him go on his way .till than you can wait he is not coming right now.

yes he will.the moment he steps into the pond, all the water will flow out and there will be nothing left in the pond.he will climb back and there you are,he has returned!!
