The Saturn has been around since around 2002, and has fallen behind the competition:

-poor reliability
-poor resale
-cheezy interior
-weak base motor, Honda V6 is nice
-poor crash test results
-poor handling - tipped up a wheel
-problems with AWD system

The Mitsubishi is not a bad vehicle, the redesign makes it a much more desirable vehicle. The old models had a weak 4 cylinder, poor resale and reliability. The new ones have a nice V6, but are not likely to fare better on resale and be that much more reliable.

I would skip a few amenities you do not need and have managed to live without these past years and get a Honda CRV or Toyota RAV4. The new Hyundais look to be promising as well. Pick up a Consumer Reports Buying Guide.

Both the Saturn Vue and Mitsubishi Outlander are nice. Most new cars have the same life expectancy now, so it's not so much a matter of which will last longer. It all comes down to which one you like better. I try to picture what the style of the vehicle will look like in 5 years. Will it look outdated, or still stylish?

Well I don't own an suv, I don't own a car yet (Im getting my license in jan.) But my dad drives a 2005 Honda Crv Exl. During these hard times gas is expensive and even the EXL (top of the line all wheel drive) CSUV (compact sport utility vehicle) Has a economic 4 cyl that still delivers great power and fuel economy with lots of room not to mention it drives like a car and not a huge suv. But Id love a Cadillac Escalade (The normal one, not the full size (esv)) for my self IMO IDKY just like it im not really into suvs I like older muscle cars and I could go on forever explaining why.

Do you really need an SUV? Granted they are giving them away but why not something a bit more fuel efficient? How about a Honda Accord/Civic. If you are looking for more room, don't be fooled by SUV's, they are not that roomy. I have a Subaru Wagon that has lots of room and has been super reliable. Not the most exciting car out there but it gets me from a to b.
Hyundia's are reasonably priced as well. We had a rental when we crashed one of our cars and the Hyudia was a nice ride.

Good luck with whatever you end up with.

I was doing a car/SUV search online, among the best ranked cars/SUVs in 2006 and the Honda Element was among the best. Also it was priced very reasonably just under $20,000 (not bad for a new SUV). Also Ford did well and also at a good price. I don't think you should have a problem finding a SUV well priced now due to the increase in gas prices. Good luck

Consider Hyundai they have the Tucson and Santa Fe that may fit your needs. Both have won accolades from critics and Hyundai offers America's best warranty while being cost competitive. Definitely worth looking into before making a decision. Good luck!

The vue is a great car, you can even get it with a Honda engine and transmission, called the "redline" version

I would also conisder the element and pilot, do your research here, they have real prices

Just depending. I have a 92 Ford Explorer, but the Expedition is bigger and more roomier. Again, depends on what you want and like. So size and price will be a factor.
