You will want to check with your carrier for specific info, however most carriers will allow a 22" carryon bag. The 22" refers to height + length + width. The sum of the three should be 22" or less.
Keep in mind that carriers in some parts of the world - particuliarly europe - are more strict in their carry on allowances - and some have weight limits. Again, your airline's web site is the best place to check on this.

It must fit in the overhead compartment above you or be able to fit into the space under the seat on front of you..

a backpack works best for me. it has tfit in the upper compartment.
