one thing to consider when using satellite based internet - it is one way only .
normally you connect via dilaup and then download via satellite connection.

The idea is that to connect and tell the internet where you want to go takes very little speed (hence dialup to send) but for you to see websites, download files you need a fast connection downloading.

if you dont have to do this dont.
if you live out in the country and have no choice it is an alternative.
also check around you area there could be ISP suppling two way internet wireless at very good speeds

HughesNet is a 2-way satellite internet system. HughesNet does _not_ require a phone line connection for uploading info, not anymore.

I've had DirecTV for almost 10 yrs. I first subscribed to it when my local cable company didn't carry everything I wanted. Took the equipment w/ me when cable wasn't available right away when I moved to my new subdivision, did it again the second time for the same reason.

I've always had my internet service separate from my DirecTV, even now w/ my cable modem, even though I pay an extra $10/mo for not subscribing to their digital cable, mostly because the cable co doesn't carry all the channels I want.

The satellite internet was never an option because HughesNet is not compatible w/ VPNs due to conflicts w/ the compression scheme they use. So don't feel compelled to use HughesNet just because you've switched to DirecTV. They won't feel hurt by it.
