Wondering which you prefer more red or white wine? I buy wine for my house every once in a while, mostly for girls who come over(I really don't drink wine that much), so i was wondering what your favorites are? And what brands?

I don't need wine to eat with. Just a wine to chill and drink.

Generally hot weather white or rosé. And cooler weather red. Although some people have a specific preference. I like dry whites and reds like merlots. There are loads of very good Cavas on the market (sparkling wine from Spain), which are fun. enjoy!

i generally have both red and white on hand. probably 70% red and 30% white. preferred varietals are Sangiovese for red and Sauv Blanc for White. My favorite brands are the following:

Whites

isabel estate sauvignon blanc - new zealand
oyster bay sauvignon blanc - new zealand
luna pinot grigio - napa
silverado sauvignon blanc - napa
cambria katherine's chadonnay - central coast

Reds

silverado sangiovese - napa
luna sangiovese - napa
cambria julia's pinot noir - central coast
King Estate Pinot Noir - oregon
wild horse zinfandel - paso robles

sparkling

Schramsberg J. Schram Sparkling - napa
Mumm Cuvee M sparkling - napa

as a norm I usually buy either the luna (white & red) or the silverado (white & red) by the case. you get a better deal and they are great wines year to year.

these are a smattering of my faves. But I am also known to just go to Trader Joes or World Market and buy all sorts of wines from Chile & Europe. I don't spend more than 10 - 15 on a bottle. I love try new stuff. I also do not believe the comments that most women prefer whites. Most of my female friends prefer red. But then we all work in the wine industry.

Go to Trader Joe's. They have good wines that are not expensive. They do have some very cheap ones that I don't recommend. Typically they make good wine choices, so anything above $6-7 should be decent. They are nice and they won't try to sell you something expensive if you don't know about wine. Hopefully you have one near you.

As far as which do I prefer- I agree that the weather kind of dictates it for me. Hot weather, cold wine (white) cold weather red wine. Sometimes you want the wine to go with the food, but there isn't much that red wine doesn't go with, so I guess that's my favorite.

I drink whichever wine I have a current taste for. When it is cold out, I enjoy a heavier red like a Shiraz. when it is warmer, I enjoy chilled whites, especially Chardonnay. My favorite brands are Yellow Tail, anything Mondavi and Charles Shaw. It's a good idea to get a few different bottles in your house and learn what wine you prefer and when. It will also provide the girls a choice for something they enjoy. Happy drinking!

Beringer is a good brand for all colors. It's affordable and I have never been disappointed with them.

I usually prefer reds, and without regard to food, my favorite is usually a pinot noir. For sweet I like the White Merlot over the white zin, and for white I prefer a Sauvignon Blanc to a chardonney. I have no idea why chardonneys are so popular, because I find them strong and tannic and I never ever buy them. A Sav Blanc is much more mild and drinkable and a bit off the beaten path. It's also a great cooking wine.

I do have to admit my really favorite reds are French - Beaujolais or Cotes du Rhone regions. But that's just me. I have a thing for lavender undertastes and these also tend to have less sugar in them, yet they are mild and fruity.

If you want to impress but don't want to look like you're stocking the bar for babes (which some might see as a turn off) stick with various kinds of beer, some Chardonnay and perhaps a sweeter white like pinot gris as well, and a few different types of red, Cabernet sauvignon, merlot and a nice Rioja wine, for example. Stay away from wine coolers and fruity girly drinks, which just scream "I always have different girls over". Having mixers for Martinis or Cosmopolitans however, might be seen as cool.

There's a great Australian brand out there - Black Swan - very nice reds. I just tried Marcus James - an Argentinian Malbec - yummmmm! I can highly recommend it for lovers of inexpensive red wine.

Women typically prefer whites (Chardonnay). My personal preference is reds...Cabernet Sauvignons and Merlots especially.

Try finding a brand called Ravens Wood; they're relatively affordable, have good body, store well and aren't typically as tanic as other wines. Also look for a brand called Red Diamond (I like their 2002 Chardonnay).

I don't know what your budget is but Yellow Tail and a lot of the Australian labels have good wine cheap, like 7 bucks a bottle.
I prefer Shiraz for red or Pinot Grigio for white.

you can't make generalizations about wine. there are so many factors.

what are you eating?
summer or winter?
if the girl is knowledgable about wine she might like dry.
if she doesn't know a thing, she'll go for the white zins.
and you can't make generalizations about women either!! LOL!

good luck. just keep a couple of types and leave it at that.
keep some brie around too. and maybe a colby
