A friend of mine has a cable going to the other cables on the roof. The cable company did not cut anything. Can he just buy a box on ebay and receive basic cable channels?
I am just interested if that is technically feasible. Not if it is legal.

digital cable or analog cable? It makes a difference. IF analog cable. you don't need a cable box as long as the tv is cable ready. I have two televisions in two bedrooms that do not have a cable box since they are cable ready. I just had to go into the tuner setup to select cable instead of antenna.

If digital cable, the box might not work. I believe the cable company sends a signal down the line to enable the digital box. Your friend may end up with a box that he can't use.

most cable boxes these days are basically a computer terminal that the cable company is able to send signals to , that decides what channels you get, who you are when slecting pay per view movies or shows.
having a subscription allows them to control the box and what you watch.
