My grandmother has been living with us for a year. We have call waiting on our phones but she never hears the beep. I have been out on several occassions trying to call home but I am unable to get through. I am very tired of this because what would happen if I were to be in a situation where I need help? I just recently transfered from a community college to a university and I keep recieiving phone calls from them but when someone calls me she will tell them to call back later and will just tell me a women called for you today. This college has so many numbers how am I to know where to call. Today she gives me a message from yesterday with the wrong telephone number and tells me this morning someone else called. She can not take a message down correctly. Also when someone calls the house and leaves a message she will play the messages on the machine and ends up shutting it off. I have suggested to my parents to have her get her own line but they won't tell her to.

I have a prepaid cell phone and I can't afford to pay a month so to have people call my cell instead of my home phone I just can't do that.

Explain to the people that you need to get info from, like the college, that you can best be contacted by email. That way you can get important information that way. All colleges have email accounts as do instructors and they usually have no problem utilizing this- it would be as if you had no phone and it was your only contact information. If this is not always an option, talk to your grandma about how important it is to get thi information- put a pad of paper and pen by the phone so she can write down the number and info. If you need help and can't get through on your line, call someone else to help you until the line is open. Good luck.

Similar situation here. I wasn't getting my business calls because the boys were always on the line, either they didn't answer call waiting or told the client to call back later or erased the messages from the clients. We do have caller ID so that helps a little but I returned the favor to them , so to say, and kind of forced them into better phone etiquette. I knew they were waiting on a call so I purposely got on the phone and didn't take the call waiting, and then as soon as I hung up I moved the message over into the retrieved message area and they didn't look there. About 3 or 4 times of this and they knew I was serious about it all and we work together. Sometimes a second line in the home in just your room with no frills added will only run you $10 to $15 a month, and talking to your parents to help with this line since they are reluctant to talk to your Grandmother about her own line. It never hurts to ask.

Grand Ma should be forbidden to answer the house phone if important messages are being missed. You parents will catch on when they start missing their messages too. Have you thought of temporarily placing a whiteboard or black board next to the phone. Also she could get a phone that makes the rings louder and the voices more clear, they are available now. She could also get a phone that stores the caller id and names the caller as well, then all she needs to do is write down the time of your call and you can go back to that ID person in the phone. Remember Grandma loves you and you need to find some patients and keep you respect of her in check she is your Grand ma and age bring with it struggles for everyone in the family. Good luck

Why don't you provide e-mail address so that they can contact yu through e-mail. Also if your grandmother is on the phone constantly, you can go through the operator and get the call interrupted. Or have your parents sign up for a family contract with one of the cell phone companies and you just pay the extra 9.99 they charge for the added line. good luck.

I believe you can get a second number, that has a different ring, but attached to you current phone line. it is much cheaper than a whole second line. Sometimes called a "party line" You can then buy a machine that will auto answer that type of ring only.
