My Shih-Tzu has allergies. He has had shots, pills, creams, dips, sprays, powder shampoos and he still scratchers and in places knaws the blood out. Someone told me to use peroxide. And I don't want to use it if it will burn him. He has sensitive skin any way.

Peroxide can do more damage than good to skin. Try neosporin or polysporin. Liquid bandage also works well.

If the wound is open don't put alcohol or peroxide because it will retard skin growth and slow healing. That is why hospital don't use it anymore.

If the wound isn't open I see no reason to put it on in the first place. Try a head cone and consider that this is probably behavioral not medical. He could be anxious or allergic to his food or if could just be habit. The cone will stop it temporarily and may break the habit and give the skin a chance to heal. Healing skin is itchy, when it is done healing it will be less itchy. Try it for a couple of week at the least maybe a few months. Once the dog forgets about scratching then try again.

Good luck and peroxide will hurt a bit. The only reason I have peroxide is to induce vomiting.

go to http://earthclinic.com and read the info on dog itchies w/scratching until they bleed. There are home remedies there that do contain peroxide. There is a specific recipe that you have to follow if you wish to use the perioxide. I myself had a similar problem w/ my dog scratching herself until she bled and started to lose her hair too and I found this website that is FULL of home remedies and the peroxide recipe worked very well 4 me, it was Ted's remedy #1. Feel free 2 e-mail me on this if you like.

Never use peroxide on a dog. Their skin is not like ours. Use a first-aid cream/ointment that does not contain lanicane. Lanicane is the ingredient that numbs the pain and is harmful if injested.

Yes, I would not use peroxide.

Has he seen a vet? My dog has sensitive skin/winter skin allergies and he got a prescription for that.
