when I select it, it deletes my previous numbering. For example, I'm trying to create
a. blah blah blah
b. blah blah blah
(indent) i. blah blah blah
(indent) ii. blah blah blha
c. blah blah blah

Okay, problem comes in when I want to place a bullet after the i and ii. If I insert the bullet after i. it gives me the bullet, allright but the i is gone. What am I missing?

You can't use both bullets and numbers on the same line. What you could do is to use the bullet, then type in your i. ii., etc.
You really don't need both of these, though. Either one or the other will suffice and is actually less confusing and more professional.

I believe you will find that bullets and numbering are mutually exclusive formats for a selection of text. If you really want to defeat that rule one messy solution would be to create a picture of a bullet which you can insert throughout the numbered text.
