I didn't even notice when it happened. At first the images were lighter/grayer than normal. and next time i turned it on, there was no images but the audio is fine. i can't even see the volume or channels. no difference when i switch to tv/audio and turn on my dvd player. So now i am "listening" to cable and dvds. i assume it is the tv tube. is it worth repairing or just buying a new one?

Thanks for any insights or advice.

Your picture tube is getting weak.

If your tube is too weak it wont display the image because its not

Sony quality, basically.

The tube is usually the most expensive part. Its best just to get another quality sony.

All the TVs that walmart sells and Sams sells are junk TVs and dont last a flip.

34" Tube Sony HDTV 1080i, Excellent picture/Quality and price, XBR also.

Sells about $899.

Well, TV tubes should last almost a life time. I had a simular problem when i moved my TV into my new place. The color was all messed up and the picture kept going in and out.

What i did is i took the TV (while it is on) and moved it from 1 side to another to see if the picture would be any better. Didnt help much. So i took the TV and moved it for a min. (meaning unplug it and walked around for a sec with it) I then pluged it back it and it worked fine after that. The TV is about 9 years old. It seems like i moved the tube back into place. I dont know if this will help you but its worth a try

If this doesnt work. Then you can call around and ask how much is it to repair. Most of the time is it the same price as a brand new one. Remember, The older TV's have gone down in prices because of all the new stuff out there. I got a Samsung HD flat screen picture tube for $400. Normale price was $1200. Got it at frys but they dont have anymore. LoL. Good Luck

cheaper to purchase a new one - the cost of labour and the part woudl far out weight the cost of a new set, and considering prices a newer LCD or plasma woudl be worth even a little more expense.
LCD tv prices are dropping rapidly (SAM's Club had a 32" lcd for $700 here in Canada)
