Ships transport cargoes into the UK and between ports all over the wprld. The cargo is often oil transported in by huge tankers and without the merchant navy the UK would soon run out of petrol and diesel, so all cars would cease to operate. Much of the imported food on sale in UK supermarkets like Asda, Tesco, Morrison etc. also comes into the UK through a merchant navy ship bringing it into one of our ports.Other cargoes come in on board bulk carriers such as iron ore used to make steel at plants in the UK, and steel production would cease if the merchant navy did not exist. So our merchant navy is absolutely vital to everybody living in this country.

The Merchant Navy was originally formed to transport supplies to our military ships in times of conflict, they also provided troop transport and rescue operations.
It still has this role as you were able to see in the Falklands war,in peace time of course, there role is mainly carrying cargo.
I Hope this helps.

You know it's not really a navy, like the real one. It's just a phrase used to describe boats that don't have guns on them.
