i love my boyfriend very much but we have fights a lot. when he called me this i just didn't know what to do.

Arguments are one thing, disagreeing is not only ok it is normal. Name calling is not ok! That shows a certain immaturity on his part. I would tell him that only an idiot would stay with someone who calls her names and then dump him.

He calls you an idiot because when he was younger he was considered or treated as one, don't take it personally. He had to fight to get out of that state and doesn't understand how other people could not act as he did.
I know what I'm speaking about as I did the same before...

When someone speaks to you disrespectfully, show them the door. I suggest counseling for you. How can you love someone that clearly does not respect you enough to care how this affects you. Verbal abuse is the same as physical, don't let what he says control you. He is a weak and pitiful man to call someone who loves him an idiot. Take your keys and run for the border!!!!!

I guess people say mean things when they're not thinking. You should tell him that your arguments are to address issues, and not to find new pet names for each other.
Stick to the "here-and-now" issues, not past ones, and address the issues, not the people attached to them.
He loves you (and you him), but hates the issues (as you do too). So why not resolve the necessary and move on with your relationship?
Talk to him. Better yet, communicate.

You do not need to take this crap!!! When everything calms down talk to him and tell to respect you, and if this ever happens again just leave him because is never going to stop and the only one that could get hurt in your relationship is you.
