There are chemicals in the wine that your body can use. I do believe that some studies have shown that people who drink wine like this have lower rates of heart disease. I also remember that there are other things you can drink or eat to get the same effect if you do not drink wine (like Bela Lugosi).

Yes, Red Wine is packed with anti-oxidants and can benefit your heart and other areas of your body. However, red wines differ between there anti-oxidant content and some are higher than others. Cold Climate Red Wines such as New Zealand, New York, Chile AND Oregon contain the highest amount of nutrients. Also, Pinot Noir wine is made with the best anti-oxidant grapes. It is advised not to drink anymore than 1 bottle of wine per week. So a glass or two is totally fine! 1 bottle usually contains around 9 units of alcohol. I have tried a few anti-oxidant wines and I found my favourite to be Oyster Bay Pinot Noir 2010, New Zealand. Try a nice New Zealand Pinot Noir slightly chilled for the most anti-oxiants and taste! If you are going out partying and drinking vodkas and shots etc..... there is no point drinking the red wine? If you drink when you party, only drink wine!!!

This is a contested issue, mostly because many don't want people to take this research as a licence to drink and drink.
However, a lot of research has shown that drinking any alcohol raises your HDL cholesterol and has other blood thinning effects that decrease the risks for heart disease.
Red wine in particular is considered healthy because in additon it has a lot of flavonoids and other compounds that act as antioxidants in the body (which, for example, lowers cancer risk).
Beneficial compounds are also found in dark beers and they are probably looking for them in other alcoholic beverages as well.
This needs to be balanced against liver disease (caused by drinking too much alcohol), the fact that (any) alcohol seems to raise breast cancer risk in women and all alcoholic beverages are calorie rich and could thus contribute to a person being overweight (which comes with a host of health problems).
So, basically, some say a glass of wine a day (perhaps up to 2 glasses if you are a healthy male) will extend your life, if you otherwise live healthily. But you probably shouldn't take up drinking for the health benefits if you aren't already drinking and also know that it is generally agreed that you cannot stockpile the "one-a-day" and drink them all on the weekend. Binge drinking is associated with liver problems and more.

They say 1 glass of red wine will help keep your bad cholesterol down and in long run, will help you live longer. You can also substitute grape juice which does the same thing. More then 2 glasses a day will turn into a bad habit

Nothing is guaranteed. And 2 glasses is overkill. But evidence has shown that one (120 ml or 4 oz) glass of RED wine or dark-colored grape juice will reduce the risk of heart disease due to the antioxidants from the grape's skin. It's not the alcohol, but the juice. So it doens't have to be fermented to work.

At least 1 glass of red wine is recommended to help prevent cancer and promote good sleep habits if you drink before bedtime.
I think the reason people say it helps make you live longer is due to the Italians. They have the best eating habits and drink a lot of wine causing them to live a more stress free life causing them to live longer.

so they say because of the action of tannins contained in red wine, which is supposedly benefitial for your heart.
Tannins are astringent, bitter-tasting plant polyphenols that bind and precipitate proteins. The term tannin refers to the source of tannins used in tanning animal hides into leather; however, the term is widely applied to any large polyphenolic compound containing sufficient hydroxyls and other suitable groups (such as carboxyls) to form strong complexes with proteins and other macromolecules
in wine, are also found in wine, particularly red wine. Tannins in wine can come from many sources and the tactile properties differ depending on the source. Tannins in grape skins and seeds (the latter being especially harsh) tend to be more noticeable in red wines, which are fermented while in contact with the skins and seeds. Tannins extracted from grapes are condensed tannins, which are polymers of procyanidin monomers. Hydrolysable tannins are extracted from the oak wood the wine is aged in. Hydrolysable tannins are more easily oxidised than condensed tannins.
Modern winemakers take great care to minimize undesirable tannins from seeds by crushing grapes gently to extract their juice. Pressing the grapes results in press wine which is more tannic and might be kept separately. Wines can also take on tannins if matured in oak or wood casks with a high tannin content. Tannins play an important role in preventing oxidation in aging wine and appear to polymerize and make up a major portion of the sediment in wine.
Recently, a study in wine production and consumption has shown that tannins in the form of procyanidins, have a beneficial effect on vascular health. The study showed that tannins suppressed production of the peptide responsible for hardening arteries. To support their findings, the study also points out that wines from the regions of southwest France and Sardinia are particularly rich in procyanidins, and that these regions also produce populations with longer life spans.
