Dents in cans can put stresses on seals and cause them to leak. If this happens, microoganisms can enter the product and cause it to spoil.
A minor dent on the side of the can is not likely to cause problems. However, you should discard any can that is dented on the lids or seams. Also throw out cans that are leaking, bulging, or are rusted unless the rust can be easily removed by light rubbing.
If you aren't sure, don't take any chances. As with all foods, if you have any doubt as to the safety of a product, throw it out!

There are two rules that apply to canned foods.
1- NEVER buy or eat anything from a can that is oxidated somewhere
2- NEVER buy or eat anything from a can that is dented (even if this is small dent).
This is because at some point in the can storage some air may have filtered into the can causing it to oxidate or you never know when the can is dented if there is not a small filtration of air unavailable to plain sight.
in case some air has run into the can somehow, it means that the development of bacteria has started thanks to the oxigen contained in the air and therefore they may be growing on the food inside thecan.
so, it is not very recommended to use these cans. Just in case.
sometimes they are cheaper in the markets because they are dented or oxidated and people buy them because they dont know this and they find it good for their budget and home economy.

No, you can eat from dented cans. When I find a dented can at the grocery store, I don't have a problem with it - hey, they are usually cheaper also. Just make sure that the can wasn't dented as much to make a hole. You will notice a hole because liquid will come out, you will see the hole, and also the can will rust after a few days. Go ahead - eat the canned food!

I never buy dented cans but sometimes I get one by accident. I think if the date isn't up and the can isn't swelled you are OK to use. Just use your own judgment and go by looks and smell. Even perfect cans can be off. I opened a can of baked beans a few weeks ago and they tasted like they had way too much smoke flavor in them. Another time I got some that tasted like kerosene.

It is bad when the lid/top part is bulging.
"It is not generally difficult to detect when a canning job has gone bad (done properly - this will seldom happen). The first sign that a can of food is no good is that the lid will pop up (or bulge), also there might be seeping around the seal. Mold growing on the surface of the food is a sure sign of a problem. Also abnormal colors in the brine of food, cloudiness in the brine, a white colored film on the surface of the food can all be indications of contaminated food. "

There's nothing wrong with using dented cans the only thing you want to be caution of are rusting cans. Rusted cans can poision your food and give you metal poisioning so make sure to never eat straight out of a can itself.

Small dents are fine. What you have to be careful of is any outward bulging on the can. That indicates that bacteria is brewing inside.

As long as the dent is not on a top, bottom or side seam, i'ts alright. If any seam is affected, it's safest NOT to use the can.
