Does anyone else find it rude when you are talking to someone, their cell phone rings, and they pick it up and start talking, leaving you hanging there for a few minutes?

What is a good way to hint to someone proper etiquette who chronically suffers from this condition?

I don't think there IS a nice way to do this, but you can have a little fun with it -

Next time they take a cell call, simply take out YOUR cell and call them. Yeah, while they're right in front of you. Make their call waiting beep, and when they answer it, say something in a non-confrontational tone, like "A-HA!! So THIS is the way to get your undivided attention!" or "I just didn't want you to forget about me!"

That's probably really rude, but will most definitely get their attention!

That is indeed very annoying, and rude.

I don't know why some people are absolutely married to their cell phones. I turn mine off sometimes, and my girlfriend and I have an understanding - if one of us calls the other's cell phone and the person is in the middle of a conversation or at dinner or in any position where it would be inconvenient to answer the phone, just call back at your earliest convenience.

I have some friends who if they don't pick up with the wife/gf calls, its an absolute disaster!!

You don't want to be like that either - here's a few pointers:

1. Sometimes you do have to be on call. If you are meeting with someone and may have to answer the cell phone, inform the person in advance that you might have to answer it. When the phone does ring, say "Excuse me." before answering it.

2. If you are at a diner with 3 or more people and you have to answer your cell phone, get up and leave and go out to the lobby, so at least the other two people can talk in peace.

My boss does that all the time. Since he is the boss I can't be too rude about it but I have commented on it sometimes (especially if it happened more than once in a short conversation). Sometimes I think I'll only get his full attention if I call him on my cell phone and talk through it even if I'm sitting across the table from him :P

I find both the cell phone and the standard telephone to be very annoying when I am speaking face to face with anyone. I resolve my own conflict when the phone rings in such a situation by refusing to answer it. When this situation arises and I am in someone elses office, if they answer the phone, I walk out, and let them hunt me down at their convenience. For the most part, my coworkers have gotten the message without my saying a word.

my sister does this a lot and as soon as I hear her cell ring I tell her I will let her go.
I call her long distance and she answers her cell for local calls.
This causes her to have to call me back on her dime. It did not take long for her to get the message. She only answers now if it is a business call she has to take. And that I do understand as I have a cell phone for business calls as well.

As their phone is ringing, before they pick up, tell them that if they plan on taking the call, you don't have time to stick around. Maybe then they'll think twice about answering and talking for a long time.

Just ask them at the outset of your conversation to turn their cell phone off so you don't get interrupted.

If they refuse, I think you can see where you stand in their order of priorities, and you might want to re-think your friendship with them.

i think of you have been rude, particular. =) you're in a public place, talking on your cellular telephone. whilst I have not have been given any problems with that, i think of you have a minimum of asked your caller to hold on one 2nd, then direct the guy and female to the place the lemonade is. that can't take greater advantageous than a million minute in case you be conscious of your food market. it can't take greater advantageous than 30 seconds to assert "i'm sorry, i don't be conscious of the place it incredibly is," and then stick inclusive of your communication. Now, I do think of that the guy substitute into rude while he continously tried to get your interest even in spite of the undeniable fact that he substitute into completely conscious which you have been on your cellular. He could have found out, then asked somebody else.

YES IT IS VERY RUDE !!! I just walk away, and later tell them why if they ask. Cells are generally over-used to begin with, and that's why there's voice mail. I wonder how many people are ADDICTED to the need to "be in touch" and reachable all the time?

When it happens the next time, just walk away without any hesitation.
Better still set them up by asking a friend/family to call you when they know you are having a conversation with this person. Do exactly what she does to you.
