This is serious and no joke. My bird is tame and lets me pet her. I say her cause of her other female behavior and feather markings. She is little over a year old. Sometimes lately, not all the time when I am petting her head and neck she scoots up as to let me pet her back. Then she squats and goes into like a trance. Her feathers on her head go down and she sings like crazy. She will do this until I stop petting her back. She hasn't laid any eggs but if this is her idea of mating I want to know so I don't trick her into laying eggs! What say you?

Yep she is offering herself up. It does not really have much to do withhow much she likes you. It is only a function of biology. And even better when she gets really turned on she might try to feed you some regurgitated seed. Yummy!

If you don't want her to be in breeding condition and possibly start laying, you need to limit the things that encourage her to make hormones that make her ready to breed. Some of those factors are:

sufficient food, especially high protein and fresh veggies,
sufficient water, and
eight or more hours of light each day.

Clearly you can't limit her food and water consumption, so in order to to get her out of breeding mode you have to limit the amount of light she gets each day. Cover her cage or put her in a dark room after eight hours.

I used to keep my breeding brids in a room that by accident was fairly dark. I had to put full spectrum lights on the cages in order to give them any appreciable daylight. I would routinely give them eight hours of light, and when I wanted to have them go into breeding mode I would slowly increase the light until they had twelve or fourteen hours per day. Worked like a charm. You can turn your bird on and off the same way.

Good luck.

most likely she has chosen you as her mate...I doubt she's acutally trying to mate with you.. she just wants to be close to you and enjoys your touch. the eggs will come whether or not their is fetilization...these eggs can become bound in the bird and kill them if they don't come out. I would recommend taking the bird to an avian specialist in your area and have the bird checked out...the vet should be able to give you a better Idea as to what is going on with your bird and how to deal with a possible egg problem. also it's only about $15.00 for a DNA sexed test you may want to make sure it is a female. and if it is a male then no egg worries!!

I have 2 cockatiels, and the female will squat down sometimes and does same as yours and sings somewhat, remember the male is the one that can sing. My Tatiana's partner does not pay attention to her, so she does what she can with me! Mind you, she will lay eggs no matter whether she has a partner or not. Good luck!

I had a female cockatiel that did the same thing... it is pretty normal... and I also have a duck that does the same thing when I try to pet her. :)
