Now I lay me down to sleep I pray the Lord my soul to keep, If I die before I wake, I pray the Lord my soul to take God bless Mommy, daddy, etc. They usually have their own list, Amen. Children can not be sheltered from death and they don't need to be scared out of their wits either. We always explained to our 4 children that they are praying for God to watch over them so nothing bad would happen. They didn't make a big deal out of it so we didn't make trouble where there wasn't any.
Our supper prayer: Dear Lord thank you for this food, thank you for this lovely day, please bless the hands that prepared this food help it to nourish our bodies (add anything extra) Amen You will find one for your family.

We say a variety of bedtime prayers. The Our Father mostly, Hail Mary, and the Gaurdian Angel prayer.
We don't say grace. I also help my son to do the sign of the cross.

My daughter is 3 1/2.
We say "God is great, God is good, Let us thank him for our food, By His hands we all are fed, Give us Lord our daily bread, Amen" for dinner.
We say The Lord's Prayer and "Now I lay me down to sleep" at bedtime.
We also say prayers in church and ad lib some at bedtime (where she can say whatever she wants to God and Jesus)

Both of my children have roseries that hang by their beds.

I have three children ages 13, 10 and 5. I tell them to pray from their heart. My youngest loves to say grace at meals. We don't really tell him anything to say...he seems to watch us when we pray, watch what things his brothers pray about and then he follows, with his own. For instance, one meal he may ask God to bless our food, and then say thank you for mom, dad, and brothers....and the next meal he prays he may ask God to bless the food and thank God for peace and the dog. We just try to encourage him to have a personal relationship with God, and to pray from your heart. We also try and pray on the way to school, for things such as a good lunch at school, a good day, the teachers, etc. I personally think that at 4, if your child hears you pray, they can pray a short prayer on their own, using what they hear as an example.

Yeah I need to work on this soon with my 3yo :) We don't have one yet, but when I was a kid my mother taught us before bed:

Now I lay me down to sleep,
I pray the Lord my soul to keep,
If I should die before I awake,
I pray the Lord my soul to take, Amen.

Before meals it was:

God is good, God is great,
Let us thank him for our food.
Bow our heads, we all be fed.
Give us Lord our daily bread, Amen.

We ask God to watch over us while we sleep....and we thank God for giving us food and shelter and providing us what we need when we need it.

At bedtime, I try not to mention any prayer that mentions death...like the one that goes "if I die before I wake"...it's too scarey for a child.
