A lot of good answers here.
If the steering wheel is ****** to one side and putting pressure on the lock pin, it can prevent the ignition from operating properly. Try manually turning the wheel each way hard while operating the key.
The brake interlock will also prevent the car from starting if the brake isn't depressed, so apply the brake. And the shifter interlock will prevent the key from working if it isn't in Neutral or Park.
If you've tried all these things unsuccessfully, then your ignition key lock may be simply worn out. If it's a double-side key, you can try removing it and flipping it over. If you are mechanically inclined, you can replace these if you have a service manual, steering wheel puller and other tools, or you could simply call a locksmith. They can replace the whole assembly quickly and even cut a new key right there if yours no longer works, but it's not a cheap alternative.
Good luck with that...

Most likely cause is ignition switch interlock on the column. Pull the screw from lower steering column cover and remove it then remove screw holding ignition switch to column. With ignition switch removed but still plugged in the vehicle should still start. You should be able to see the piece inside the column that this actuates, move it with a screwdriver. If this unlocks the wheel than the problem is most likely in the switch. Should all be visible enough to make a dermination where the problem is. Also I have taken those ignition switchs off shook them turned upside down and reinstalled and had them work fine for a temporary fix. Best bet is replace entire steering column with a used one. See car-part.com for one in your area. Hope this helps.

the key cylinder is the old style it needs to be replaced
take a small hammer , put the key in the ing and tap it a couple of times while holding the steering wheel to the left as far as it will go
this should release the lock.

BEFORE YOU DO ANYTHING - try holding down on the Brake Peddle - THEN - try turning the key to start it.
I had one car that if you didnt hold down the brake, you were not going to start it. Its a saftey feature on some makes of vehicles. If that doesnt work - then try some of the other answers you were given.
[also, make sure the shift is in park if its automatic transmission]

Try moving the gear selector for the auto transmission around a little bit. The park interlock may be acting up.
